College Credit

What Should You Do?

It is important that you understand Transfer Credit Process to ensure that you can take the right steps to earn transfer credit.

How It Works

Your home-host College or University makes the final decision regarding how many credits will transfer from your study abroad program and how they will be treated (e.g. major credit, elective credit, etc).

1.    Pre-approval

  • As early as possible, speak with us to learn about potential course options you are interested in. We will provide the syllabus and course descriptions from the host College or University that you might need to receive course pre-approval.
  • Make an appointment with your study abroad office or academic advisor to review your course options.  Make your appointment early as advisor schedules are often very busy as deadlines approach.
  • Receive a signed pre-approval form from your home College or University. We strongly recommend that you receive pre-approval for the course that you are planning to attend.

2. During the Program

  • Your home or host College or University will require a minimum standard of academic performance in order to grant transfer credit, so it is important that you attend class and perform according to the their standards and expectations.
  • Your grade will be determined by the professors criteria from your study abroad advisor, in relation with CVSA assignments, tests, and examanitation process and results.

3. After The Program

  • Ensure that we have the name and address of the appropriate person at your host College or University who was in charge of monitoring your Academic study abroad  experience.
  • Take all course material back with you, including syllabus, work completed, essays, and examinations; in case it is ever needed.

Obtaining a advance approval from your home institution is necessary, as each college, university, or state has its own policies regarding the type of courses they will accept.  Course Syllabus, for review by your institution, can be provided by CVSA.

Students also can arrange for college credits through Seattle Central Community College for their participation in a Ciudad Vieja Spanish Academy program.  Please note that students need to fulfill the requirements of our courses in order to earn credit.

For SCCC students HUM 291 (Spanish Language through Experiential Activities) may be of particular interest to you.  This is a five or ten-credit course option designed for the undergraduate student who plans on taking advantage of language study opportunities outside the USA. Students earn credit for their participation in a language school abroad and completion of written assignments, such as a daily journal, mini-ethnography, and critical thinking papers. Students will be expected to complete all course requirements upon their return to the United States.

After completing HUM 291, a student may register for Spanish 101, 102, 103 Credit By Examination (5 credits per course). The cost for each course is $445.000. The prerequisite for SPA 102 is SPA 101 and the prerequisite for SPA 103 is SPA 102. (Contact SCCC for information on taking Credit by Examination only.)
